Great Pictures but a very fragile camera and expensive to fix!



The Canon PowerShot A480 10 MP was a nice camera for a short time. It took great pictures as well as nice videos with good sound quality. This camera was accidentally dropped while in a extra heavily padded carrying case (2 or 3 feet from the ground) The rear display screen shattered on impact and the camera would no longer work. The camera was sent to Canon's repair center in Elk Grove Village , IL. The quoted cost to fix including parts labor and shipping was $95.23. I asked if that was the best price possible as the camera was just past the warranty. I was told they would give me a 20% discount making the total repair cost $ 78.32. I felt this was a fair price - I gave the go ahead to repair it. It took about two weeks to receive it back. After taking few dozen pictures and a couple of short videos(which were good), I put the camera away for 5 months. The next time it was used I was on vacation. I took a dozen of so pictures, while checking the pictures that were just taken in the display, the camera suddenly lost the menu and all control - Immediately becoming totally useless. I couldn't believe it! All the vacation pictures that I wouldn't be able to take! After the vacation was over and returning home, I sent the camera back to Canon's repair center. I explained over the phone that this camera was very recently repaired and the problem. The reply was sorry but the cost will be $ 95.23. I asked again if that was the best price possible as the camera was just recently repaired. Again I was told they would give me a 20% discount making the total repair cost $ 78.32. I told them "No Thanks" just send it back to me. This will be my last Canon camera.

I loved the camera its just the stuff i plan to use it for, "Expatiation photos of wildlife" it doesn't have a strong case or programed options to set easily i got this camera a few days ago and i really need to read up on the full use of it but so far its a really fair priced camera and high resolution shots that come along with it.

Blurry, grainy, wash out flash and horrible software.



BTW, I have had this camera for several months. I made sure I became accustomed to the settings before writing a review.



I would give it away, but that would just be too cruel to the receiver unless they were maybe 5 years old and just would like a toy to play with.

This is the second one of these cameras I have purchased. The first was for the engineering department I work in. I selected it because of the large pixel head and the ability to use alkaline batteries instead of lithium rechargeable ones. It worked so well, I replaced our camera at home (got tired of reaching for the camera after it set for a month and having the rechargeable batteries dead, and the back-ups dead as well). We love this camera.

I bought this camera as a birthday present for my 13 year old grandson. He loves it. It was easy to learn use and takes great pictures. It even does well in low light situations. Its compact size makes it possible for him to carry it everywhere, and he does. One drawback is that it did not come with memory. You have to remember to buy a memory card. 4GB is good. I paired this camera with a Square trade warranty, but it is very sturdy. We have not had to try it out. This was a good buy.

I purchased this camera for my mother. I noticed after comparing photos taken with my Canon SD 850 IS that the photos were very grainy. I took several photos of the same subjects in the same light and found that the Canon photos were MUCH better. I called Kodak 800-235-6325 and after repeating everything I said to the technician several times, without him answering any of my questions, as to why the photos were so grainy, I asked to speak with his supervisor. He simply hung up on me.

Bought this after my Kodak EasyShare bit the dust. Everyone raved about Canons, so I thought I'd give it a try. Now, I'm dying to go back to Kodak! This camera takes waaaaay too long to charge the flash between each shot, then waaaaay too long to focus on the subject, and then there's another second delay after you hit the button. Trying to capture "the moment" with my kids is impossible! Or even with group shots I find myself apologizing, "Hold on...it's still charging...hold that smile...trying to focus...not ready yet..." It takes about 5-10 seconds to charge the flash between each shot. Which, when people are waiting, or when your kids are running around, is an eternity. Action shots are impossible -- always blurred. And I haven't been too impressed with the color quality either.



And NOW I'm having trouble with it saying I need new batteries every time I turn it on. Even after I put brand-new batteries in it. I've only had this camera 7 months, and I'm ready to throw it at the wall.



Bottom line: This camera is way too slow, and the quality of the pictures is only so-so. It's more trouble than it's worth.

We bought this camera for our 7-year-old last year for Christmas. We wanted to find a camera that was not too expensive so it wouldn't be a big tragedy if it got broken. The flash stopped working about three months after we had it. When we finally got around to sending it in, they fixed the flash and sent it back and now it won't take videos. When you turn it to video mode and push the shutter button, it takes a picture. The picture quality is bad, too. The pictures aren't as good as my first digital camera, which was a Canon 3 megapixel or my second, which was a Fuji 5 megapixel. I don't understand why they can't take that older technology and make a really good inexpensive camera for kids! Most people don't need 8 megapixels (or more) anyway, and what good is a bigger picture if it looks like crap? The Fisher-Price kids cameras with the big rubber case take such bad pictures that they are not even worth buying, in my opion. How is that fun for kids? They want to be able to take pictures like mom does. This camera was a real disappointment.

I've had this camera a few years now and transported on road trips, to Europe, to Japan. I have dropped it probably half a dozen times and the bastard just won't die. A week ago I was hiking up a mountain in Japan and exhausted, I accidentally let the camera slip out of my hand. That means while the lens was extended it dropped from my height, six feet, down onto a rock, then kept smacking down the hill from rock to rock. When I picked it up it was badly scratched, the lens was a little malfunctioning, but it STILL worked.



Oh, and then at my hostel I accidentally dropped it from my bunk bed about 10 feet off the ground...and now the camera works perfectly again. This is the most immortal camera I have ever come into contact with.



Plus: great features, fits into pocket, large screen, etc etc.

I am fascinating with it. nice size, even slim enough to fit in a shirt pocket. the panoramic feature is really good.



batteries last me two entire days with normal (30) photo shooting and 5 minutes videos.



Only one thing: the mode dial easy moves to video setting, when putting it in your pocket or in a case.

I use this camera on my job and it takes great photos, and in a variety of lighting/scene situations. It is not, however, the best in low light situations without using the flash.

You can read the manual, but I find the best way to learn to use any camera like this is to play with all the settings.



Are your images grainy? Press the "Menu" button and select "Scene," then image mode, then select a higher quality image mode. I use normal, but you could bump it up to High if you wish. The higher the quality image the larger the photo file size, meaning you'll have less space on the SD card for a lot of photos.



Do you find that the LCD screen is too dark or too bright? You can adjust it. Press Menu again and select the tool that looks like a wrench. You'll find all sorts of controls that you can adjust to your preferences. And of course this is where you'll find the "format" card command... Every time you delete your photos from the camera's memory it's wise to format the card.



Now for the "Scene" command button, which is just to the upper left of the four-way command control. You can leave it on Auto, or... use the four-way command control to select "Scene." Then cycle through the many choices, including portrait, sports (fast action shots) landscape, beach, snow, museum, Subway, Pizza Hut, etc..:)



If you and your subject are standing in the shade, and sunlight is behind your subject, you may want to experiment with "Forced Flash" mode. This will cause the camera flash to turn on no matter what and will properly illuminate your subject's face so it doesn't end up looking dark with a bright background. Press the four-way command button, the up button with the image of a lighting bolt. Cycle down to the lighting bolt and you'll be in forced flash mode. Check out the other flash modes while your there.



Wanna make a video? the "Scene" button and cycle down to "Movie" and your camera becomes a video camera... (You can also use the camera as a voice recorder!).



Have you been disappointed about the quality of indoor photos of friends/family etc. because the flash illuminated their faces way way way too much? Here's a photo trick I often use indoors: Step back three or four or five or six feet from where you had planned to take the photo. Then zoom in just to the point where you would have been standing, and then take the photo! You'll get a more evenly balanced facial tone and even capture more of the background that would tend to have be washed out when standing too close to your subjects. (You can also try the "party" mode - using the Scene button to access all of the special selections)



If you'd like to take really really close-up photos, of say Abe Lincoln's face on a penny.. Select "Macro" mode. There are two ways to activate it. One is by pressing the Scene button then cycling down to "scene" then cycle to the right and select the icon of the two tulips...

Or, you can leave the setting on "auto" and using the down command button, which shows the image of those tulips again, press and select "on" for macro close-up mode.



As with all cameras of their ilk, when you don't have a viewfinder to look through on a sunny day, you have to rely on the LCD screen, which can be impossible to see in bright light.

That's about it... other than it uses a special Mini B to USB cable. I got one on Amazon for a couple of bucks.

Before buying this item, I looked up reviews and saw that it was around average 8.7/8.8-9. That was enough for me. It has a lot of features. It does make a clicking noise haha it's not broken. But I like the camera a lot compared to my old Kodak camera that had 3 features although the macro was awesome. I really like this camera, I would suggest it's for someone who wants it for leisure purposes than professional use. There's a panorama option too which I haven't learned how to use and I'm one of the type of people who are too lazy to read the manual so I'm figuring it out slowly. Also to power the camera it comes with a usb inserter (2 in 1), so it's great, you get your usb for the computer and your charger :) It's easy to use. And the screen is very large, even people I know who are elderly can see everything on this screen so woot! :) I think it's a pretty good camera. I didn't give it full stars only because I'm still getting to know it and I haven't found something that really makes me go: OMGGG no other camera has this option! THIS IS AWESOME. lol. But it's a good camera. I'd keep it in a case or something after you buy because I think it could break the screen. So that's my little suggestion. :)
