This rack is pretty much a piece of junk.. but I think since it's all cheap plastic I will probably end up just drilling mine out to try and make it safe.
I believe the tubes slip under the weight of the bikes and/or expansion/contraction due to temperature changes as others have mentioned. We put it securely against a ceiling joist in our garage.. twice it fell.
The second time it fell and put 3 dents in the hood of my car. Enough is enough..
It is probably safe if you drill out the tubes and install a locking bolt and then "safety wire" it to the ceiling.
But then again why buy this design if it's unsafe without modification?
I'm just glad expensive bikes are tougher then car hoods...
